Primary Years Programme

The ISB is a Primary Years Programme (PYP) candidate school pursuing authorization by the end of the school year 2023-2024. The PYP uses an inquiry-based approach to teaching and learning and is designed to enhance and develop the academic, social and emotional well-being of each child. We teach skills that encourage students to explore, think independently, collaborate, ask questions and understand the world around us. We support a developing love for learning.  We embrace the international aspects of our school community and believe in the importance of understanding different cultures and customs of our students’ peers. With our dedicated team we ensure all students feel valued, secure and well cared for.

In Primary School, students explore six transdisciplinary themes:

How We Express Ourselves | Inquiry into the ways in which we discover and express ideas, feelings, nature, culture, beliefs and values; the ways in which we reflect on, extend and enjoy our creativity; our appreciation of the aesthetic

How The World Works | Inquiry into the natural world and its laws, the interaction between the natural world (physical and biological) and human societies; how humans use their understanding of scientific principles; the impact of scientific and technological advances on society and on the environment

How We Organize Ourselves | Inquiry into the interconnectedness of human-made systems and communities; the structure and function of organizations; societal decision making; economic activities and their impact on humankind and the environment

Sharing The Planet | Inquiry into rights and responsibilities in the struggle to share finite resources with other people and living things; communities and the relationship within and between them; access to equal opportunities; peace and conflict resolution

Within each theme, students learn about the subjects of:

At the heart of the PYP is the student developing the attributes of the Learner Profile , conceptual understanding, approaches to learning and the ability to take action.

PYP Exhibition

The culmination of the Primary school is marked by the PYP Exhibition in Year 6. Students engage collaboratively in a student-initiated and designed project in which they explore, document and share their understanding of an issue or opportunity of personal significance.
